How To Make Business Cards In Photoshop | 2017
If you want to do a topical business card, vintage style is a good choice. In this lesson I will show you the tricks which will help achieve an attractive effect.
Working on a business card begins with the definition of parameters and the consideration of printing requirements. Create a new document by pressing CTRL + N. In a menu with the settings of image characteristics input the following values:
Width – 3,5 inches
Height – 2 inches.
Resolution – 300 ppi
Color mode: CMYK
We have got a blank for the standard business card. Create a copy of the background layer (CTRL + J).
The next step is to define the working zone. For that we need a ruler. To fetch a ruler press CTRL + R.
Then press the mouse button at the top of the upper ruler scale and drag the guide line to the upper card base. After that drag the guide line from the left ruler scale to the left margin of the card. Repeat this step twice to set the supportive lines to the right and bottom margins of the card.
When working with business cards do not forget about the bleed zone.
Go to Image > Canvas. Set new height and width values: width – 3,75 inches, height – 2,25 inches.
Thus we added 0,125 inches at each side so that the text and design do not get hurt during cutting.
If the text (and sometimes the image) is close to the margin, it looks ugly. Now we will set the margins of the printable field where there is major information.
The printable field can be limited in several ways. For example:
“By eye”. For that use a ruler (a method from Step 2). Decrease the margin sizes by 0,125 inches.
Or you can input exact parameters for guides. This will help achieve a more precise result. To input new values go to View > New Guide.
Then set the following values:
Top Margin: Horizontal – 0,25 inches
Bottom Margin: Horizontal – 2 inches
Left Margin: Vertical – 0,25 inches
Right Margin: Vertical – 3,5 inches
We have prepared the business card template! Now let us develop the layout. Go to the copy of the background layer. Activate the Gradient tool and set the general color.
Pay attention that you can always change the color scheme on the Gradient parameter panel by pressing the gradient window. You can also consider all gradient styles and experiment with the settings (icons are nearby the gradient color window).
Note: the author used Mirror gradient type and colors # c28c44, # c5bb88, and # c28c44.
Now it is time to add the texture. In this project I will use the old paper texture. You can use your resources or find the appropriate options in image banks. When the texture is selected, move it to your project and place above all previous layers.
When on the paper texture layer, go to blend mode and set the Overlay. This simple method will help join the texture and the general color.
Great! Now we have prepared our business card for the next step – filling with content. The logo is our first element.
A well developed logo will add allure and more professional look to any business card.
In this project we will create the round logo with the sun figure.
Activate the Ellipse Tool. Create a new layer above all the rest. Draw a circle by pressing Shift. Choose a color.
For further work we need to rasterize the circle figure that we drew. For that press the right mouse button and choose Rasterize in the submenu.
We need to add a symbol in the round logo base. You certainly have your own corporate symbol, and I am using the standard sun figure.
Activate the Custom Shape Tool. Choose the most appropriate sample from the form gallery above. Add a new layer above the layer with a circle, and draw the selected figure on it.
Press CTRL and click the logo figure icon on the layer. This will help highlight the figure.
Go to the rasterized layer with a circle. Press DELETE, then take the highlighting off. Switch off the visibility of the layer with the logo figure.
In my project I will use the dash line instead of standard lines since they will make the card look retro. Now I will show you how to do it.
Activate the brush tool. Choose the standard round stiff brush with a size of 5 pixels from the brush set.
Now, press the brush panel icon. Go to the shape subsection. Change the space to 200%. This will help make the round brush a row of dots.
Create the new layer by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + N. Then, using the brush we just set up draw a direct dash line (press shift to make the line direct).
Duplicate the received line several times. Place the lines as you wish.
Let us add some more additional lines for design. Lessen the brush size to 3 pixels and draw lines in the upper and lower parts of the card.
Now let us make an accent in the lower informative part of the card.
For that activate the Rounded Rectangle Tool and draw the rectangle in the part of lower small lines.
Great! Now let us just add our text. We are using several different retro fonts which you can download from dafont.com.
Turning to the final details! Highlight all layers. Press the right mouse on the layer panel and in the submenu choose “Merge layers”.
Download any favorite vintage or grunge brushes and decorate the business card. Translator’s note: the author used the Eraser tool. In the tool settings the grunge brush was selected. You can achieve a good result if you add the mask layer to the logo (text) layer and use the black grunge brushes in the layer mask.
Change the mode of application of the layer with vintage decorations and the information layer to the Color burn.
The final flourish. Duplicate the information layer, this will give expression to the main part.
We have finished the lesson. Effects that you have mastered today can be surely applied to the design of posters, flyers, or postcards.
